He was a lost soul. She was a vampire. Everything was bloody perfect.
Absolutely enjoying this series! Haven’t read anything else in weeks now!
A Vampire’s Claim is Lady Daniela and Devlin’s story. It’s set in the Outback, way back before we met them in The Mark of Vampire Queen. Dev is a stockman having a beer when he sets eyes on Daniela. She’s gorgeous, and something you never see in the bar like the one they’re in. But that’s not all that pulls him to her. He’s had a hard life, lost more than most people lose in a life time, he doesn’t have much to give but his body, and that he gives. Daniela enjoys taking it, but she finds she wants more. She’s never had a 3rd marked servant before, and Dev has her wondering how good it must be to have one. Bur Dev is no one’s submissive, no way he’s going to be a human servant…
… he sensed her scrabbling attempt, just as he sensed her aversion to the position he chose, as if she was used to to preferred to be on top. But when their eyes locked once more, it didn’t matter. Two puzzle pieces were two puzzle pieces, no matter what way you turned them.
After book #1 I knew I’d finally found one of those series that you can’t let go of till you finish the last book. I’ve had that once or twice before and definitely remember Joey W. Hill’s Nature of Desire series giving me the exact same feeling. The writing is poetic, just draws you in. Some words too sweet yet they still feel right. The characters are unlike those you’ve met before… it’s not just because the women are dommes, it’s how well we see their sensitive side yet know they’re the strongest heroines. It’s how sexy and strong and gentle the heroes are. It’s the storyline – different, engaging, so erotic… it’s basically the first to the last page of just pure magic.
I will say Jacob and Lyssa (book #1 & #2) remain my favorite hero and heroine… but Dev and Daniela definitely gave them a run for their money. Dev was this gentle tortured soul. A man’s man, broken down by tragic events but still alive, still surviving, and perhaps finding something he wants bad enough to live for.
“You make things in me hurt, love. Hurt so bad I think I’d rather take a gut shot. But here I am, anyway.”
But as much as Daniela wants a 3rd marked servant, she knows Dev is not cut out to be one. Too alpha. Perhaps too sad, still living in the tragedy of his past. But that doesn’t stop her heart wanting him.
If she wanted something like that with Dev, she had to have his willing surrender. And for that to happen, she had to win his soul, down to the darkest level.
I loved this story. Loved the intense sadness, the action and suspense, the steamy moments (wowza!) Everything about it was beautiful, even when it hurt… And after all was said and done…
Perhaps in the end, it wasn’t about vampire, human, or any other question of power and place. It was about finding the other half of the soul, in whatever vessel it rested.
