It’s almost impossible to have a series where the books just get better and better… almost, because we have the Stripped Series being that exception to the rule. I’ve absolutely loved every book in this series, and this one is the best one yet!
Pretty When You Cry is the long awaited story of Candy and Ivan. I, like everyone else, couldn’t wait to find out what Candy and Ivan’s story is. Why the animosity when they’re clearly linked in some way? And it did not disappoint. We get it from the beginning, when Candy escapes a religious community and finds herself in Tanglewood and in front of Ivan. She needs a job, she’ll even strip, but Ivan has other plans for her. He wants to keep her, but he has proclivities, stuff she feels she escaped from, no way is she going to be trapped with another kinky older man. But she feels something for Ivan, maybe if he let his guard down, she might learn to love him, because she already loves it.
This basement, this building. The space where he watches me, both of us held by our own dark desires… we are made of the same thing, he and I. Of sin and hope, of power and pleasure. We are made to dream.
No, I’m not going to tell you what the kink was, because it’s taboo, very taboo, and I want you to discover it for yourself. Thing is, Skye Waren writes the best dark books I’ve read… and while the Stripped Series is not her darkest, I feel like it’s her kinkiest. For an erotica reviewer, you cannot imagine how many sex scenes I read in a day. I should be jaded by now. And I do skim over and roll my eyes at some sex scenes but Skye Warren reminds me why I read erotica. It is so well written, so steamy I never know what to do with myself. She writes erotica the way I want it to be written – different, kinky, hot.
But other than the steam which I can’t get over, is the storyline. This is no long sex-scene-turned-book without any story. Her Stripped Series has always had an amazing storyline, I just always felt like they could have been longer, more explored and drawn out. That’s of course a testament to her skills that I just want to read, read, read… BUT, this one was perfect. The storyline was not a pretty one. Candy has seen a lot in her life, so has Ivan. The storyline drew me in and held me captive. It was fully explored so I wasn’t left wanting, and again, while it is not pretty, while you will hurt for these two characters, you also understand them, understand what makes them tick. I absolutely loved everything about it, about them.
That’s how we are together – depraved and beautiful.
I loved watching Ivan learn to let go, learn to love…
“All I have to do is look at you, and I’m hurting with how much I want you.”
Sigh. Skye Warren at her best!
