We all know the old adage, ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’. I generally try not to but its so hard sometimes! When i’m putting together a freebies list, I admit, I judge books by their covers, if a cover is horrible or too obscene, then i’ll probably pass the book. Mostly because I usually don’t have that much time to read blurbs and reviews. Personally i’m friends with some wonderful people on Goodreads and if they recommend a book i’ll most probably buy it regardless of the cover.
A friend of mine told me that she finds covers with real people on them weird. To be honest I once did but have gotten so used to it now I hardly ever notice. I prefer having my own idea of the character though (mostly Henry Cavill, seriously, it doesnt matter if the guy is blond or ginger, he’s always Henry Cavill to me) 🙂 I would buy any book that has him on the cover. It doesn’t matter if the title is “How to change a tire” I will get it!
sigh…I could stare at this all day…
I’m actually not sure what I feel about sexy covers though…I used to hate them because then I couldn’t read the book in public but with a kindle now I don’t think it matters to me one way or the other. But clearly some authors or publishers must think it makes a difference. Bared to You by Sylvia Day for example…as you know it started out as this;
Changed to this;
Anyway, now to less than appealing covers. Liberating Lacey is a fantastic book. I loved it! (Check my review here) but whats with that cover?!
If it hadn’t been a recommendation from a trusted Goodreads friend I would have passed it on Amazon. Speaking of Goodreads, I posted my review of Knight by Kristen Ashley and another friend told me she always ignored the book because of its cover but that my review had made her change her mind. I don’t mind the Knight cover…its simple true but again…a brilliant read!
What about you guys? Do covers play any role in convincing you to get a book?
